In der Marzipanproduktion fällt Mandelhaut als Nebenprodukt in großen Mengen an. Bisher wird sie meist thermisch verwertet. Lässt sich daraus ein neuer Werkstoff entwickeln? Kann aus vermeintlichem Abfall etwas Wertvolles entstehen? Zwei Studierende gingen dieser Frage nach: Moritz Tigges nutzte Mandelhaut zur Herstellung von Spielfiguren. Kinderspielzeug besteht oft aus Plastik – es geht leicht kaputt, wird verloren oder landet im Mund. Die Figuren aus Mandelhaut bieten eine nachhaltige, spielerische Alternative und werfen Fragen nach Lebensdauer und Materialgesundheit auf. Jaeyoung Kim versuchte sich an einem Biokunststoff aus Mandelhaut. Doch das Arbeiten mit neuen Materialien ist komplex – statt eines funktionalen Kunststoffs entstanden fragile, organisch anmutende Objekte. Auch wenn das Ziel nicht erreicht wurde, liegt in darin ein wichtiger gestalterischer Erkenntnisgewinn. Almond skins are a byproduct of marzipan production in large quantities. Until now, they have mostly been thermally recycled. Can a new material be developed from them? Can something valuable be created from supposed waste? Two students explored this question: Moritz Tigges used almond skins to create toy figures. Children's toys are often made of plastic – they break easily, get lost, or end up in the mouth. The figures made from almond skins offer a sustainable, playful alternative while simultaneously raising questions about their durability and material health. Jaeyoung Kim dedicated himself to developing a bioplastic made from almond skins. However, working with new materials is complex – instead of a functional plastic, fragile, organic-looking objects were created.
