Die Parable Duologie von Octavia E. Butler – bestehend aus "Parable of the Sower" und "Parable of the Talents" – handelt von einer dystopischen Zukunft Amerikas (2024–2090) und begeleitet Lauren Oya Olamina, eine junge Frau mit Hyperempathie, die eine neue Religion namens Earthseed gründet. Die Handlung, aufgeteilt in acht Jahre und in Tagebuchform geschrieben, diente als Grundlage für meine gestalterische Umsetzung. Ich entwickelte acht einzelne Tagebücher, die jeweils ein Jahr darstellen. Um die Vielfalt von Tagebuchformaten zu betonen, habe ich vier verschiedene Formate ausgewählt, die jeweils zweimal verwendet werden, einmal pro Roman. Ursprünglich sollten die Hefte lose sein, doch aus praktischen Gründen habe ich sie über eine Graupappe verbunden: geschlossen wirken sie wie Einzelhefte, geöffnet ergeben sie ein zusammenhängendes Buchobjekt. So verbindet das Design inhaltliche Struktur mit funktionaler und ästhetischer Gestaltung.

The Parable duology by Octavia E. Butler – consisting of “Parable of the Sower” and “Parable of the Talents” – is about a dystopian future in America (2024-2090) and follows Lauren Oya Olamina, a young woman with hyperempathy who founds a new religion called Earthseed. The storyline, divided into eight years and written in diary form, served as the basis for my creative process. I developed eight individual diaries, each representing one year. To emphasize the variety of diary formats, I chose four different formats, each of which is used twice, once per novel. Originally, the booklets were supposed to be loose, but for practical reasons I joined them together using gray cardboard: closed, they look like individual booklets, open, they form a coherent book object. In this way, the design combines content structure with functional and aesthetic design.
