Ich bin ein Fan von surrealen und seltsamen Geschichten, wie sie sich oft in den Genres Horror und Science-Fiction finden. (Leider schreibe ich dies kurz nach dem Tod von David Lynch.) Für meine Thesis habe ich mich für Illustrationen zu einer Kurzgeschichte von Abraham Merritt aus dem Jahre 1918 entschieden. In Wikipedia heisst es: „Merritt gehörte mit Edgar Rice Burroughs und Henry Rider Haggard zu den einflussreichsten Autoren amerikanischer Abenteuerliteratur der 1920er- und 30er-Jahre.“ In „People of the Pit“ entdeckt ein Abenteurer eine unbekannte Zivilisation fremdartiger Wesen am Grunde einer Kluft und kann nur knapp entkommen. Was mich überzeugt hat, ist die fantastische düstere Atmosphäre und die etwas altmodische Sprache, die gut mit dem Inhalt zusammenpasst.

I'm a fan of surreal and strange stories, often found in the horror and science fiction genres. (Unfortunately, I'm writing this shortly after the death of David Lynch.) For my thesis, I chose illustrations for a short story by Abraham Merritt from 1918. The german Wikipedia states: "Merritt, along with Edgar Rice Burroughs and Henry Rider Haggard, was one of the most influential authors of American adventure fiction of the 1920s and 30s." In "People of the Pit," an adventurer discovers an unknown civilization of alien beings at the bottom of a chasm and narrowly escapes.
