Das Buch spielt im Marschland an der Küste North Carolinas. Die Marsch ist für mich ein besonderer Ort, da ich selbst in einer Küstenregion aufgewachsen bin. Eine naturalistische Zeichnung passt in meiner Sicht sehr gut zum Inhalt des Buchs, da die Natur durchgängig in ihrer Rohheit thematisiert wird. Ganz naturalistisch sind die Farben aber letztendlich nicht geworden, da das Grau vom Bleistift durch die Farben hindurchscheint. Der Grauwert in den Farben bringt etwas Düsteres in die Zeichnungen hinein. Schließlich geht es im Buch auch um einen Kriminalfall. Die Protagonistin Kya sammelt Fundstücke aus der Natur. Das macht einen wichtigen Teil ihrer Entwicklung aus. Also habe die Zeichnungen lose in das Buch gelegt. So kann ich die Sammlung der Bilder zu jeder Zeit erweitern. Denn das ist für mich die Essenz des Sammelns: Ein Prozess, der über einen längeren Zeitraum stattfindet und die Zeit auch braucht, um zu einer Sammlung heranzureifen.

The book is set in the marshland on the coast of North Carolina. The marsh is a special place for me, as I grew up in a coastal region myself. I think a naturalistic drawing fits the content of the book very well, as nature is consistently addressed in all its rawness. However, the colors ultimately aren't entirely naturalistic, as the gray of the pencil shines through the colors. The gray in the colors brings a darker quality to the drawings. After all, the book is also about a crime. The protagonist, Kya, collects objects found in nature. This is an important part of her development. So I placed the drawings loosely in the book. This way, I can expand the collection of images at any time.
